Based in Calgary, Alberta, the Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society (AARCS) is a grassroots animal welfare organization built on a foundation of compassion and kindness.
In 2018, I had the pleasure of working with AARCS to create social media assets as well as promotional material. Using a mixture of stock photos and the shelter’s own photos, the first cover photo was designed to be a generic header that would be able to promote the AARCS mission. The second cover photo was made in order to promote the society’s Barn Buddies program, which aims to help find homes for cats that would not like to live in homes but would make excellent barn cats.
As part of a push to create new products for the AARCS shop, I was asked to design apparel that could be sold in order to support the society itself. I wanted to create a more subtle design that would be fashionable without being overtly branded while still being true to the society’s identity. While the Changing Lives Through Kindness design did not end up being used, the Home is Where the (Paw) Is design—with hand-illustrated cat and dog versions—is available on the AARCS store as mugs!
The AARCS regularly hosts dog adoption events, during which the adoption fee is greatly reduced and same-day adoptions can be processed. With some freedom on what the event should be called, I decided to run the headline Yappy Days, a play on “Happy Days”, by the marketing coordinator, which was subsequently approved. The following poster—later translated into a cover photo for social media—is done in a bright, airy style with a focus on type hierarchy to easily get all the important information across in a limited space.
