Hello! I’m Jasmine Tan, a graphic designer based in Calgary, Alberta. Originally born in Malaysia, my family and I moved to Canada when I was fifteen. Around this time, I discovered Adobe Photoshop and, armed with only a (questionable) knowledge of the magnetic lasso tool, I first forayed into the world of digital art and design and never looked back. Ten years later, I’m very proud to say that I’ve expanded my skill set and—more importantly—trained my eye for design, which I believe is crucial for creative development.
In 2009, I attended the Alberta College of Art & Design (now the Alberta University of the Arts), majoring in Fine Arts. However, even though I’m fond of illustration, I decided that the fine art route was not what I was passionate about and threw myself wholly into graphic design. In 2015, with the threat of being a mediocre starving artist looming over me, I joined the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology’s Graphic Communications and Print Technology program.
Whether it’s building something from scratch or improving on what is already there, I believe that there is always a new first impression to make. Good design can be subtle, but it speaks volumes even if you don’t really notice that it’s there. My goal as a designer is to deliver work that is not only of the highest quality, but also to find the most effective solutions to any problem. I’m passionate about my work, and that passion transfers over into every project that I take on. From branding to social media to copy, I believe in making something that I can stand behind.
